Notable errors cut across the use of punctuation marks, numbers, formatting and spelling, grammar andstyle. This article is aimed at drawing our attention to them so as to avoid repeating these errors as we continue with our formal writings.
In quotation, comma (,) and full stop (.) come before the closing quotation mark (”), while other punctuation marks come after.
But whenciting from a text, the punctuation comes after the parenthetical page reference as in:
The title is “The Tough Guy” (11).
a.Use of Colon:
It is used to introduce a quotation or statement that is grammatically independent from a clause.
When you quote a specific page, always cite page number from your source.
Use illustrative quotation frequently. Be wary of generalizing without specific support from the text.
Use block quotation for passages that would take up at leastthree lines of original text. Note that in block quotation, the punctuation comes before the page reference.
Eg: “…The Tough Guy” (11)
In quoting a quotation from itself, first use double quotation marks before the single quotation marks are used.
Use Square Brackets (and not parenthesis) to indicate where you have changed the original text of a source.
Don’t use quotation marks in emphasizing a point or express an apology. You can either rephrase or italicize it.
Cite your reference with detailed specificity: This is necessary for an easy location of the source.
